The reason for this is simple: I don't have time to keep great content on the site at a level of consistent scheduling you guys deserve. With school and personal life stuff going on, I can only do one full video a month, if that, at least for the time being. So, what to do, what to do?

How about bring aboard demoversi and his upstart Irreverent Edutainment series? Demoversi is a really cool guy and his videos are pretty dang entertaining. But, he's just the start. I'm calling ALL video makers. I don't care if you have two videos or fifty. While most students will probably do their's on a poster board, Mr. Patel suggested we try to make a video. I decided to do that, and well... I've had this skit in mine for a while now, and decided this would be the perfect time to do it. I decided to use the costume from my Track and Field review for this character. And yes, that is a Sega Genesis with a toilet paper roll, straws, and a timer taped to it.

Okay, so I've run into some filming snags for one reason or another (mostly time and space limitations), so I figure I'll go ahead and start scripting future episodes in the mean time so I can do better with scheduling. If you'll look at the side bar on the right, you'll see a poll for future episodes of R:I. I may end up doing all of these, I may not. My next review might not even be one on the list. But, by voting, I'll have an idea of what you guys want to see, and I can produce such a video. Whichever one has the most votes I will review for sure however. You can vote for multiple games (since there might be two on the list you would like to see in the future).

In other, unrelated news, I would like it very much if someone would be interested in keeping up the iPen Productions Fan Page. All it would really entail is making posts concerning iPen vids, news updates, etc. So nothing too major. All you would have to do is update pretty much just once a week. Review: Impossible - UFC Undisputed 2010

Film Review: Toy Story 3

Toy Story is better than Toy Story 3. It’s better than Toy Story 2. Pixar’s first foray into feature length computer animated films is better than Up, Wall-E, and every other film Pixar has made in an attempt to recapture the magic that was Toy Story. In doing so, Pixar has failed to recapture that magic. However, what they have done, is create an all new magic with each film, making each one a classic in its own right, if just marginally inferior to Toy Story. The main problem is that Toy Story was just so ground breaking, its writing so pure hearted, and its characters so memorable that any other Pixar film just cannot be as good. But then again, does it have to be? Does the mere fact that a film is not as good as Toy Story make it any more or less enjoyable? Of course not, and that is part of the reason why Toy Story 3 is, in simplest terms, amazing.

The original film was amazing in its own right, a near perfect film I would say. Toy Story 3 too is a near perfect film, and any criticism of it could be narrowed down to severe nitpicking. Perhaps some of the jokes were predictable, but when you have characters like the Little Green Men (as called in the series Buzz Lightyear of Star Command) who only say a handful of phrases, you can kind of guess what they’re going to say next. You could argue that the themes of the film are just retread of the second film’s theme. And while they may hold a similar theme, the telling of said theme couldn't be further from that of the second one. At the end of the second film, there is a sense that even when Andy has grown up, the toys will still have one another. At the start of the third in the series, you see that this theory has been proven false, as most of the gang has been split up, by way of trash, donation, or yard sale. Even very popular or important (whether through their own actions or by their influence on other characters) characters are missing from this tale, and not because of a lack of voice actors or anything of that nature (Blake Clarke’s spot on performance as Slinky should show that a missing voice actor shouldn’t be a problem). Rather, these missing characters are missing due to the influence their absence has on the characters. Arguably, Bo Peep’s disappearance is the most shocking, but handled in a way to show that Woody, while still not over her, has tried to move on, showing real, genuine emotion that furthers his character.

The beginning of the film where this information is given is odd, due to the contrast in scenes. It starts with a very clever, humorous account of Andy playing and bonding with his toys over the years (all filmed by his mom). This footage then cuts out, as the music fades away into silence at the line of “You’ve Got a Friend in Me”, that says “our friendship will never die…”. If that’s not an ominous way to start a family film, I don’t know what is. All in all, this feels like a much darker film, yet it had a lot more laughs it seems than the prior films. It sounds odd I know, but Pixar found a very good balance between engrossing dark themes that can actually make you question your own existence, and goofy comedy that walks on the edge of ridiculousness for a laugh you’ll be more than happy to have.

Speaking of characters, I would say that almost all of the characters in this movie with perhaps one or two exceptions are round yes, but quite static. There is almost no character growth, though that’s not to say there’s no change in thinking. That being said however, if you look at all three films together, as they should be, then you will certainly see a change in character, Buzz and Woody in particular. You would think the removal of key characters and the addition of around fourteen new ones would hinder the storytelling, but it doesn’t at all. In fact, the way information about characters is either revealed or concealed makes for a much more interesting movie, and characters that we can be more emotionally involved in. The villain in this film is much closer to Sid than Prospector Pete, though he does share similarities with both. On the one hand, you could argue that his intentions are for the best of those around him, even if they, in reality, aren’t. Then again, he never really sees the error of his ways like Sid did (of course, due to Pixar’s fantastic storytelling, emotions aren’t expressed, but implied, and he very well may have. Not to mention it’s only implied that Sid felt bad about what he did, but he could have just had the crap scared out of him by the “demonic” toys).

One big part of Pixar films is just how many references and in jokes they cram into their films. I want go through all of them, the fun part is finding them for yourselves, but I will mention one, because I missed it the first time round (somehow). Pay attention to the young garbage collector. You might recognize him from a prior Toy Story film.

I feel like I’ve only touched on parts of this film, but there’s a good reason for it. You really have to experience it for yourself. If I go into too much detail, then the film won’t have the same special quality that it had for me when I watched it. The writing is top notch, the emotion presented is eerily real, the new characters do their jobs well and are memorable, even those licensed such as Ken (who by the way steals the show, with Michael Keaton doing an absolutely fantastic job in the role), and Pixar creating a gorgeous looking film.

I grew up with Toy Story. It was the first film I remember seeing in theatres. My mom painted my room to look like Andy’s. I had all the toys, bed sheets, trashcan; everything was just like it was in the movie. I even wrote my name on the bottom of each toy’s foot. My best friend growing up, who the last time I even talked to was about a year ago, was into Toy Story as well. We created a bond with one another that will never die no matter how far out of touch we may be. When we were little one year, we dressed as Buzz and Woody for Halloween in fact (I was Buzz). It’s things like that I remember so fondly from my childhood. Now, in the summer of 2010, I am leaving the home I have lived in most of my life, and going to college, leaving everything behind me that I can’t take with me. Sound familiar? Well, I pretty much described Andy’s life in this movie. The thought of leaving my past behind me, but shown in such a thematic and emotional way, well, I’ll be honest, it made me cry, right there in the theatre. I was not alone, as both my mom and my girlfriend cried at this point as well.

It may sound stupid to have such an emotional bond with pieces of plastic (that are fake computer generated beings, so they’re fakes of fakes if that makes any sense), but that’s the effect Pixar has on you. I got teary eyed during the start of Up, but darn it all if I didn’t cry during Toy Story 3. Curse you Pixar and you’re ability to make an 18 year old cry in front of his mom and girlfriend all because you know how to create amazing films that can translate with every generation and never lessen in quality due to the fact it has a number attached to it. In shorter terms, you OWE it to yourself to go see this movie. 2D, 3D, it doesn’t matter which, just go see it as soon as you possibly can. Now, if you’ll excuse me, I’m going to go up in my attic and see if I can find Buzz, Woody, and everyone else, so long as they weren’t thrown out years ago (and I pray they weren’t). The attic is no place for a perfectly good toy…

Usually I don't get to work with others when I make videos, so i was real glad to get to this time round. Originally I was supposed to put the whole video together and have a part imitating the Nostalgia Critic. In fact, I actually got Doug Walker to be in the video for my part. Unfortunately, with the passing of my best friend, Ayana Denise Colbert (RIP 1994 - 2010), I put all videos on hold. So, unfortunately, I had to pull all involvement from this video and my own videos until after the funeral (mostly due to my role as a speaker) and I was in a better place emotionally. I'm much better now thanks to a very special someone (thanks Michelle!). I am going to refilm the Stuntman review Saturday and it should be up sometime thereafter.

The Future of iPen Productions

2010 will without a doubt be the biggest year for iPen Productions. The first reason I can't go into (I could, but it would be better to wait until it actually goes into effect). Another reason is that I have about a bajillion ideas for videos and/or series. The funny thing is, is that I've had a TON of ideas since 2008 that were either discarded, or never QUITE came to fruition.

First things first, the future of Review: Impossible. In what seems to be the case every time I go head first into a video, I get swamped by school and other activities. The next video is coming very soon, I still have to finish some scripting, but the game footage has been captured. After that, I'm not sure what I'll do. There will be a poll on the right side of the site for everyone to vote what they would like to see next. I scheduled this video to be released at the start of January, but things have been rough time wise as of late.

I will continue R:I as long as I can. What do I mean by that? Well, come this fall I'll be going off to college, and I'm not sure what my filming abilities will be (due to space and what games I can take with me mostly). If R:I cannot continue, fear not, I have a video game review series in mind that I think could be a fair replacement.

I'm sort of, kind of, working on a new series. I say sort of, kind of, because again, due to the current time frame, it wouldn't last long, so I'm in the situation where if one episode gets produced, that would probably be it. If I can get the same interest from my roommates or others in my dorm, then perhaps the series will go as planned, but we'll see.

Finally, I alluded a while back on Twitter to an announcement. That announcement is... to be revealed soon. Probably in the next four to six months. Sorry that it will take so long, but I don't want to announce anything until right before it happens. It is the biggest news in iPen history, so believe me when I say that the wait will be worth it.

Site Update - 6/18/09

Well, things have been pretty interesting this week. That's both good and bad. First, the good. I got the Ghostbusters game on Tuesday (which should already be an indicator of how good it is right there. I hardly ever buy games the DAY they come out). I'm not going to go into details on what I think about the game, because, well, wouldn't that ruin a future episode of Review: Impossible? But, I will say I have beaten it, and I probably will play through it once or two more.

Now, for the bad. The next Top Five is going to be The Top Five BEST Console Redesigns. So, I filmed, and... rubbish. Absolute rubbish. So, I tried the next day. Rubbish. Still rubbish. Now, I'm going to film again today. I think I have the issues worked out, so it shouldn't be an issue today. So, we'll see.

Hopefully it will be up on Saturday. Also, the previous Top Five will be on YouTube on Saturday. Also, I'm going to start the process of putting all previous videos on Blip.tv for this site, that way I can keep everything on the site on the same server. It's not really that important, but I'm weird that way. Go figure.

When I was in 7th grade, I was on a basketball team at a local church. I played for a couple of years, and we either made it to the championships and lost, or lost in the first round. Go figure. Anyways, in 7th grade, I was about 12 at the time, I took clips of some of our games, and put together the first video I ever edited. It's really funny to see how far I've come in 5 years.

No more standard Blogger template! Now, we have a professional layout, that is more suited for our needs. As you can see, we have several options now for following us, such as Twitter, Facebook, Digg, Stumble Upon, and even an RSS feed. These are just some ways to make sure you can keep up with everything from iPen Productions.

You may have also noticed two links at the top, iPen on YouTube, and iPen on Blip. All videos will be posted in these two locations. All videos will be posted on Blip first, then uploaded to YouTube a few days later. For videos longer than 10 minutes, however, they will be exclusive to Blip for probably around a month, until I have time to split the video into multiple parts for YouTube. YouTube has a 10 minute time limit, and unfortunately, this will mean those who follow solely on YouTube will have to wait for new content, should it surpass the 10 minute mark.

Something else you may have noticed is our new Partners section. Before, I had some links I really liked. Now, we have sites that are partners and friends of iPen Productions.

Starbolts - a Webcomic created by Chris "Cferra" Ferraiolo. It is pixel-based, about a team of superheroes fighting evil. It may sound standard fare, but it is well written, well drawn, and all around a very entertaining read.

Wanted 4 Gaming - A podcast run by three gamers, it pretty much takes things to basics. It's fairly new and pretty amateur, but these guys have gotten A LOT better since their first episode, and have the ability to put together a bang up show.

What is iPen Productions?

iPen Productions is the small production company started by myself, Braeden Orr. We have no deals, no monetary partnerships, or anything. While we would like some type of partnership in the future, right now, we are completely independent, and happy making films all the same. iPen Productions is all about independent films, independent ideas, and independent fun!

How did iPen get its name?

Once upon a time, when all I used YouTube for was watching video clips, I decided to start posting my own stuff. What did this stuff contain? Some wrestling gifs strewn together in Windows Movie Maker set to music. I also posted some videos that were just a picture of a wrestler with that theme. WWE came knocking at my door and got my account suspended for copyright issues. When trying to come up with a new name, I decided to start making my own real videos. My favorite animal is the penguin, and I decided "why not use the classic i- thing that Apple uses? No one elses uses that!" Of course, everyone else uses it, but it felt original to me at the time. Oh well, that's the name, and this is how I got it.

Who is part of iPen Productions?

Well... for about two years, just myself. I do get people to help occasionally, but for the time being, it is a one man production in filming, writing, directing, and editing.

What types of videos does iPen make?

A little bit of everything actually. We have game reviews, video logs, short comedy sketches, a comedy series, class projects, music videos, etc. iPen Productions may not make some of these anymore, but they have all been made by us at some point or another.

What are iPen's official shows?

Right now, we only have one on going official show, Review: Impossible. The Top Five is technically still around, though its only when I feel like making one. Former shows we have produced includes Arcade Spotlight, Buddy Jo 'Splains it All, and Off the Ropes. Off the Ropes could make a possible return soon, as could Literal 5 Second Movies, inspired by the 5 Second Movies of ThatGuyWithTheGlasses.com (where R:I and The Top Five have been featured a total of 7 times). There are always new skits and show ideas swimming in my head, so you never really know what's next.

How can I obtain iPen Productions' services?

All you have to do is send an email to ipenproductions@gmail.com with your contact information, and what type of work you need. I can't give prices, as it would vary by scenario, though usually a strict editing job would cost less than one where I would have to go and film first, then edit. We are willing to negotiate our prices to some extent.

What type of equipment does iPen Productions use?

Currently our camera equpiment includes one JVC camera with a built-in microphone, a professional grade green screen, and Sony Vegas Pro 8 (top of the line editing software). As time goes on, we are going to invest in a new camera, microphones, lights, and a separate special effects program.

After his death, the Muppets lost their touch a bit, though still had classics like Muppet Christmas Carol and Muppet Treasure Island. Muppet Race Mania on the PlayStation though?
